Do you need a doctor’s order for Kern Radiology?
Yes for almost every examination.
Kern Radiology’s current patient FAQ says referrals, orders or scripts are required for all exams except screening mammograms.
Routine screening mammogram
This is the main published exception to the order requirement. You can begin with screening-mammogram scheduling if you meet the screening criteria.
Breast lump, pain or abnormal prior study
That may be diagnostic rather than screening mammography. Contact your medical provider because diagnostic imaging generally requires an order.
MRI, CT or ultrasound
Have the physician’s order available and make sure the correct body part and contrast instructions are included.
PET/CT or nuclear medicine
These need specific medical ordering and preparation. Call scheduling rather than assuming a general imaging order is enough.

The radiologist needs the appropriate clinical order, previous imaging and procedure-specific information.

Preparation instructions are exam-specific.
The instructions given when your appointment is scheduled should take priority over a general internet checklist. An abdominal ultrasound, pelvic ultrasound, PET scan, CT with contrast and breast MRI can all require different preparation.
Kern publishes downloadable patient-history and consent forms for CT, MRI, breast MRI, mammography, DEXA and multiple PET/CT examinations. Completing the correct form before arrival can reduce registration time.

MRI and open MRI at Kern Radiology Bakersfield
MRI uses a strong magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to create detailed images. Because the magnet is powerful, the safety screening before an MRI is as important as the scan itself.

Scanner strength, body part, image quality requirements and the specific clinical question can determine which MRI system is appropriate.
CT with or without contrast
What patients should know before a Kern Radiology CT scan
CT uses multiple X-ray images taken from different angles and reconstructs them into cross-sectional images. Some CT exams use intravenous contrast, oral contrast or both to make specific tissues easier to evaluate.
Confirm whether contrast is ordered
The preparation and scheduling path can differ between a non-contrast CT and a contrast-enhanced CT.
Tell the staff about previous contrast reactions
Do this before the day of the scan whenever possible.
Follow kidney-function instructions
Some patients may need recent laboratory information before intravenous contrast is given.
Stay still during image acquisition
Kern explains that the technologist may ask you to briefly hold your breath to reduce motion.
Expect the scanning portion to be fast
Kern states that actual CT image acquisition is often under two minutes, although total time in the imaging room is commonly around 10–15 minutes.
After IV contrast, follow hydration instructions
Kern advises drinking plenty of fluids, especially water, during the following 24 hours unless another clinician has restricted your fluids.
Pregnancy matters.
Kern specifically advises patients who are pregnant to discuss CT risks with their doctor before the examination.

SCREENING
No current breast problem
Screening mammography is routine breast-cancer screening for an appropriate patient without a new breast symptom or unresolved abnormal finding.
This is the major Kern Radiology exam that does not require a physician referral/order.
DIAGNOSTIC
Symptom or abnormal finding
A breast lump, nipple change, focal pain or abnormal prior mammogram may require diagnostic imaging rather than a routine screening slot.
Contact the physician because diagnostic mammography normally follows a medical order and may include additional breast imaging.
BIOPSY
Tissue sampling is needed
San Dimas currently lists stereotactic breast biopsy. Kern also describes image-guided breast biopsy using mammography, MRI or ultrasound depending on where the abnormality is best visualized.
A biopsy is not the same appointment as a mammogram and needs procedure-specific preparation.

PET preparation is not a generic imaging checklist.
Nuclear tracer timing, eating, glucose control, medications and the reason for the PET study can affect preparation. Use the instructions provided for your exact PET/CT appointment.
Kern publishes separate PET/CT questionnaires for FDG scans, brain imaging, amyloid imaging and other nuclear imaging studies. That is a strong sign that patients should not substitute another person’s PET preparation for their own appointment instructions.
Walk-in vs. appointment
Can you walk in for an X-ray at Kern Radiology?
Some Kern Radiology locations offer X-rays on a walk-in basis. Kern still states that scheduling is preferred, and X-ray hours can differ from the building’s general office hours.
You have a routine X-ray order
Check the live X-ray availability page before leaving home. A facility can be open while its X-ray walk-in service is not.
You want the shortest wait
Schedule the X-ray online when the desired center offers an appointment slot.
You do not have an order
A walk-in policy does not remove the medical-order requirement. Kern’s screening-mammogram exception does not apply to routine X-ray.
The injury may be serious
An outpatient X-ray site is not an emergency department. Significant trauma may require emergency evaluation rather than a walk-in radiology visit.

The provider Connect system makes signed reports available to referring clinicians, while the California patient-portal release follows the four-day timing described by RadNet.
What to do when you cannot find the result
The exam happened today
Your images may already be accessible, but the radiologist may not yet have completed and signed the diagnostic report.
The report is signed but not visible to you
The California four-day portal-release timing may still apply.
Your doctor says the result is available
The referring office may have received it through its provider connection before the patient release date.
You need interpretation
The report is written for medical communication. Ask the ordering physician what the findings mean for your symptoms and treatment.
