Kern Radiology Medical Group operates an outpatient imaging network across Bakersfield and Tehachapi. Its locations do not all provide the same examinations: one center may offer open MRI or PET/CT, another may focus on women’s imaging, and Tehachapi currently lists X-ray only.
This guide explains the complete patient journey before you leave home: where each service is offered, when an order is required, what to bring, how to prepare, when results appear, how to download images, how insurance and authorization work and what to do when an appointment or report is delayed.

Practical Bakersfield rule:
Do not cross town simply because the order says “Kern Radiology.” First verify that the destination performs the exact exam and has the required scanner, contrast capability, authorization and appointment time.

A routine screening mammogram may be scheduled without a physician order. It is intended for a patient without a new breast symptom who is due for routine screening.
A breast lump, pain, nipple discharge, skin change, abnormal previous study or requested follow-up may convert the need from screening to diagnostic imaging, which requires an appropriate order.

Kern Radiology says it can accept an order written to another company, but any required insurance authorization must be changed or issued to Kern Radiology.

“MRI” or “ultrasound” alone may not be enough. Identify the body part, contrast instruction and reason for the study.

Online scheduling is available 24/7 for selected X-ray, DEXA, screening mammography, ultrasound, MRI and CT examinations. Call for other studies.
Prepare the required scheduling information

Kern Radiology’s preparation page asks patients to arrive at least 20 minutes before most examinations. Patients taking prescribed sedation are instructed to arrive one hour early and arrange a ride home.

Available at multiple centers and suitable for many brain, spine, joint, abdominal, pelvic and soft-tissue studies.
Open MRI
Old River is specifically listed as offering open MRI, which may help selected patients with claustrophobia or body-size concerns.
Higher-field imaging
Kern Radiology’s service descriptions include 1.5T, wide-open and 3T MRI technology, but the correct scanner depends on the exam and location.

Routine screening mammogram
The published exception to the order rule. It is intended for routine screening when the patient has no new breast symptom and no requested diagnostic follow-up.
Diagnostic breast examination
Used for a symptom, abnormal screening result or targeted follow-up. It requires an appropriate order and may include additional mammographic views or ultrasound.

Image-guided procedures
Biopsy, arthrography and interventional radiology
Interventional radiology uses CT, ultrasound, MRI, fluoroscopy or mammography to guide a needle, catheter or another instrument to a precise location. These procedures require more preparation than routine imaging.
Breast biopsy
Stereotactic, ultrasound-guided or MRI-guided techniques may be used depending on which modality shows the abnormal area most clearly.
Arthrogram
Contrast is introduced into a joint before fluoroscopy, CT or MRI to evaluate internal structures.
Other image-guided biopsy
CT, MRI, X-ray or ultrasound may guide tissue sampling from an abnormality elsewhere in the body.
Blood-thinner instructions must come from a clinician.
Kern Radiology’s preparation material lists advance restrictions for selected biopsy procedures, but patients taking aspirin, Plavix, Coumadin or another blood thinner should not stop it without approval from the prescribing provider.

Kern Radiology bills participating insurers and accepts Medicare assignment. A general statement that RadNet or Kern Radiology accepts your insurance does not guarantee coverage for every site, examination, radiologist or procedure.

The center says it has no order
Confirm the fax destination, patient name, birth date, ordered exam and referring office. Ask the physician’s office to resend it.
Insurance authorization names another company
Ask the insurer or referring office to redirect or reissue the authorization to Kern Radiology before the appointment.
The online system does not list your exam
Call scheduling. Online scheduling covers selected services, not every contrast study, procedure or specialized examination.
No walk-in X-ray is available
Check another X-ray location or schedule a time rather than driving to multiple centers without verification.
The report is not in the portal after four days
Confirm that the radiologist signed it, that the referring physician received it and that you are using the correct visit or account.
The I-Code shows only one visit
I-Codes are visit-specific. Use another I-Code or create a full portal account for additional examinations.
You cannot open a downloaded image file
Extract or unzip the downloaded folder before opening it in a compatible DICOM viewer.
